What this video shows

What this shows: What a Class 4 impact-resistant shingle upgrade means for Hill Country homes, covering hail frequency, material performance and insurance premium context. It is here to put a voice to the materials guide.

Class 4 is the top rating in UL 2218, an impact test in which a two inch steel ball is dropped on the shingle twice in the same spot and the mat must not crack. It is a laboratory rating and not a promise about any particular storm, but the reason it matters in Central Texas is straightforward: this is a part of the country where a roof can reasonably expect to be hit more than once in its life, and a shingle that survives a hit it would otherwise have failed is a roof that does not need replacing. On the insurance side, be careful what you are told. Texas does not require carriers to discount an impact resistant roof and the Texas Department of Insurance does not set the amount, though many Texas carriers do offer a credit. Ask your own carrier for their number in writing before choosing a material rather than after.
