By the Numbers
How much hail hits Texas
Texas logged 1,582 NOAA hail reports in 2024 and 1,453 in 2025, the most of any state.
The most of any state
Texas sees the most hail. In NOAA Storm Prediction Center records, Texas logged 1,582 hail reports in 2024 out of 9,010 nationwide, and 1,453 in 2025 out of 9,367. In 2024, 294 of the Texas reports were 2 inches or larger. Those counts come from the SPC’s own data files.
Damage Signs
What hail does to paint and siding
Look for chipped paint, cracked or holed siding, dented trim and spatter marks on sunny walls.
Paint and wood
Hail chips paint. Look on the walls that faced the storm for fresh chips that show bare wood or primer, and for dents in soft wood trim and window frames.
Siding
Siding cracks or punctures. Vinyl can crack or hole, especially in cold weather, and fiber cement can chip or crack at the corners and edges.
Metal and gutters
Soft metal shows dents. Gutters, downspouts, window wraps and vent caps dent easily and are a quick way to see how big the hail was. Our hail damage atlas shows these marks up close.
Before You Paint
Document the damage before anyone repaints
Fresh paint covers hail marks, so take dated photos and report the damage before painting.
Why the order matters
New paint hides the evidence. Once a wall is repainted, the chips and dents that showed the storm are gone from view. Take dated photos of every wall that faced the storm, close up and from a distance, before any repair or paint. The Texas Department of Insurance tells homeowners to take photos and video of the damage and to file a claim as soon as they can.
Our role
We advise and educate you on your options and rights, document the roof, and submit documented supplements. We are not a public adjuster and never negotiate or settle a claim for you. The full process is in our hail damage and insurance guide.
Same Storm
If the walls took hail, look at the roof
Chipped paint and dented metal on the walls are a reason to have the roof looked at as well.
The roof took the same storm
Walls are the easy part to see. If hail was big enough to chip paint or dent a downspout, the roof was in the same storm, and roof damage is hard to judge from the ground. A documented roof inspection records what we find, with dated photos, so you have a clear record before any claim or repair. Read what a documented roof inspection covers.
Keep one record
One record is easier than three. Photos of the walls, the gutters and the roof, all dated from the same week, tell one story. Keep them together with any notes about the storm date and the size of the hail you saw.
Sequence
Repairs, then paint
Damaged siding and trim are repaired first, then the paint goes on to match.
The order of work
Repairs come before paint. Cracked siding and dented trim are replaced, the roof is finished if it was part of the storm work, and then the walls are painted. Painting a whole elevation can be the only way a repair blends with the rest. Our painting service works in that sequence when it follows roof or siding repair.
Common Questions
Questions homeowners ask
Can hail damage exterior paint?
Yes. Hail can chip paint, dent soft wood trim, crack vinyl and fiber cement siding, and dent gutters and metal trim.
Should I repaint before or after an insurance claim?
Document first. Take dated photos of the damage before any repaint, because new paint covers the evidence, and report the damage to your insurer as soon as possible.
Does homeowners insurance cover hail damage to paint?
That depends on your policy and on what the damage is. The insurer decides coverage. We advise and educate you on your options and rights, document the roof, and submit documented supplements. We are not a public adjuster and never negotiate or settle a claim for you.
How do I know if hail hit my house?
Look at soft metal first: gutters, downspouts and vent caps dent easily. Then check the walls that faced the storm for fresh chips and cracks.
