Fence and Deck Staining in Texas
Texas sun turns bare wood gray within a season. Stain slows that down, but each type lasts a different length of time. This guide explains the choices, the prep, and what staining costs.

The short version
- USDA research lists 6 to 15 years for a solid color stain on wood siding, and less on surfaces people walk on.
- Gray, sun-worn wood must be cleaned and brightened before stain, or the stain sits on dead fibers.
- Penetrating stains soak in and wear away slowly, while solid stains form a film more like paint.
- Our planning range for fence staining is $1.65 to $2.75 per square foot, washed with two coats.

Direct Answer
Which stain is right for a Texas fence or deck?
Penetrating stains soak in and wear slowly, and solid stains look like paint but can peel.
Penetrating stains
These soak into the wood. Clear and semi-transparent stains let the grain show and wear away slowly rather than peeling, which makes them easy to refresh. They need recoating more often. USDA research lists 4 to 8 years for semi-transparent stain on vertical siding, and on the fences and decks we see around Round Rock, penetrating stain in full sun usually needs refreshing every 2 to 3 years.
Solid color stains
These hide the grain. A solid stain forms a film, so it lasts longer than a penetrating stain on siding and fences, but on a deck floor the film can wear and peel under foot traffic. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory lists 6 to 15 years for solid color stain on wood siding, against 10 to 20 years for paint.
Prep
Why gray wood needs prep before stain
Sun-grayed fibers do not hold stain, so they get cleaned and brightened first.
What the gray layer is
Gray wood is damaged on the surface. Sunlight breaks down the outer fibers and the rain washes them, leaving a loose gray layer. Stain applied over it bonds to fibers that are already failing.
Clean, brighten, dry
Prep fixes the surface. The wood is washed at a pressure that cleans without furring the grain, brightened, and allowed to dry before stain. Our wood staining service page describes the stages of wood wear we look for.
Planning Ranges
What fence and deck staining costs
Fence and deck staining are planned by the square foot, with a worked fence example you can check.
Our planning ranges
These come from our own pricing register. Fence staining, washed with two coats, plans at $1.65 to $2.75 per square foot of fence face. Deck and wood staining and sealing plans at $3.02 to $4.40 per square foot. Board condition, height and access move a real price inside or outside these ranges, so they are for planning, not a quote.
A worked example
Here is the math on a fence. A 150 foot fence 6 feet tall has 900 square feet of face on one side. At $1.65 to $2.75 a square foot, one side plans at $1,480 to $2,480. Staining both sides doubles the area.
Timing
When to stain in Texas
Stain dry wood in mild weather and keep it out of direct midday sun while it goes on.
Dry wood, mild days
Weather rules still apply. The wood must be dry after washing, and the temperatures must sit inside the stain maker’s range. The same heat rules in our best time to paint guide apply to stain. Stain going on in full midday sun dries before it soaks in and can leave lap marks, so fences and decks are best stained in the morning or late afternoon, with no rain expected until the stain has dried.
Common Questions
Questions homeowners ask
How often should you stain a fence in Texas?
It depends on the stain. USDA research lists 6 to 15 years for solid color stain and 4 to 8 years for semi-transparent stain on vertical siding. Fences and decks take more sun and wear than siding. On the fences and decks we see around Round Rock, penetrating stain in full sun usually needs refreshing every 2 to 3 years.
Should you pressure wash a fence before staining?
It should be cleaned, at a pressure that does not fur or gouge the wood, then allowed to dry.
How much does it cost to stain a fence?
Our planning range is $1.65 to $2.75 per square foot of fence face, washed with two coats. A 6 foot fence 150 feet long plans at $1,480 to $2,480 for one side.
Is solid stain or semi-transparent better for a deck?
Semi-transparent stain wears away instead of peeling, which suits a walking surface. Solid stain lasts longer on vertical wood but can peel under foot traffic.
