Gutters in Texas: The Homeowner’s Guides
Eight guides on the gutters of a Texas home, written for homeowners and sourced to NOAA, the model codes, the USDA soil record and the makers’ own specifications. Start with the question you have, or read them in order.

The short version
- A gutter is sized to the roof area feeding it and the rain that falls on it, and NOAA puts a 100 year hour of rain in Round Rock at 4.58 inches.
- Seamless aluminum in 0.027 or 0.032 inch is the standard, and joints are where any gutter leaks first.
- On expansive clay soil, which shrinks and swells with moisture, where a downspout ends is a foundation question.
- Our gutter prices are per linear foot with downspouts included, and guards are a per foot add.

The Gutter Itself
Sizing, materials and cost
Start with sizing, because most overflow is a sizing or downspout problem and no material fixes it. Then read how a seamless run is formed and what the thickness on a bid means. When you want it done, our gutters and drainage page explains what we install. Our rates are per linear foot with downspouts included, so one number covers the run. The guide shows the math on a 180 foot house and lists what is priced on a walkthrough instead.
Four guides on gutter size, how a seamless run is made, the metal choices and our own per foot rates.
Gutter Sizing and Downspouts for Texas Rain
NOAA Atlas 14 puts a once in 100 years hour of rain at 4.58 inches in Round Rock, 3.69 in Dallas and 4.85 in Houston.
Seamless vs Sectional Gutters: What You Are Actually Buying
A seamless gutter has joints only at corners and outlets, and joints are where gutters leak first.
Gutter Materials: Aluminum Gauge, Steel and Copper
Seamless aluminum gutter coil comes in 0.027 and 0.032 inch, both 3105 H24 alloy with a baked on finish.
How Much Do Gutters Cost in Texas?
5 inch seamless aluminum plans at $15.39 to $16.09 per linear foot, downspouts included.
Keeping Them Working
Guards, cleaning and upkeep
Gutter guard is not one product, and the guide says what each kind lets through and reads the one manufacturer warranty we install. The cleaning guide is timed to the spring live oak drop. The roof maintenance guide covers the rest of the roof.
Two guides on what a guard does and does not do, and on cleaning on the Texas tree calendar.
Gutter Guards: What They Do and What They Do Not Do
A guard keeps leaves and sticks out of the gutter. It does not fix a flat gutter, a short downspout count or a bad fascia.
Gutter Cleaning and Upkeep in Texas
Clean after the live oaks drop in late winter and early spring, and again after the fall leaf drop and the first storms.
Hail and Drainage
Hail, insurance and the foundation
Gutters are the first evidence of hail and a line on most claims, and the guide explains cosmetic endorsements and how gutters appear on a carrier estimate. The drainage guide takes the water the rest of the way, to the ground. Our storm and insurance guides cover the roof side of a claim.
Two guides on what dented gutters mean for a claim, and why drainage is a foundation issue on clay.
Hail Damage to Gutters and What Insurance Does With It
Aluminum gutters and downspouts show hail at sizes that leave shingles looking fine, so they are the first thing to photograph.
Gutters and Drainage on Texas Clay: Why Where the Water Ends Up Matters
The USDA describes the Houston Black clay under this region as having high shrink-swell potential, with cracks 1/2 inch to 4 inches wide in dry periods.
Our Gutter Work
What our gutter work includes
Seamless 5 or 6 inch aluminum rolled on site, repairs at the cause, documented cleanings, drainage 5 feet from the slab.
Install
We roll seamless aluminum gutters on site in 5 or 6 inch, pitched to the downspouts, hung on hidden hangers into sound fascia, and sized to the roof area each run drains. Downspouts are in the per foot price. Guards are a per foot add, with the product named.
Repair and clean
Repairs start with the cause: loose fasteners, lost fall, open seams or storm damage. A run that needs a refasten and a reseal does not get replaced. Cleanings clear the trough and flush every downspout, with photos and a plain language note.
Drainage and the roof
Every downspout is checked for where its water ends up, and on clay soil we document the discharge against the 5 foot rule. If a new roof is coming, the gutters go on after it, through our roofing service, so the new run is never damaged by drip edge work.
Common Questions
Gutters questions, answered
Do I need 5 inch or 6 inch gutters?
It depends on the roof area draining into each run. Using NOAA rainfall and the plumbing code method, a 5 inch gutter with proper fall handles roughly 1,500 square feet of roof per run in Round Rock and a 6 inch roughly 2,300. Large, steep or hip roofs usually call for 6 inch.
How much do gutters cost in Texas?
Our planning rates are $15.39 to $16.09 per linear foot for 5 inch and $17.39 to $18.18 for 6 inch seamless aluminum, downspouts included. The cost guide shows the math.
Do gutter guards work?
For keeping leaves and grit out, yes. They do not fix a flat, undersized or under drained gutter. We install a snap-in screen and LeafBlaster Pro micro-mesh; the LeafBlaster Pro parts warranty is Gutterglove’s, claimed with your receipt, and the screen has no manufacturer warranty on file.
Does insurance cover hail damage to gutters?
Usually, under the same wind and hail coverage as the roof, less your deductible, unless a cosmetic damage endorsement limits it. We advise and educate you on your options and rights, document the roof, and submit documented supplements. We are not a public adjuster and never negotiate or settle a claim for you.
Does The Roof Shepherd install gutters?
Yes. Seamless aluminum gutters in 5 or 6 inch, repairs, cleaning and drainage, based in Round Rock and working anywhere in Texas.
