Shingle brands we install
GAF is our primary shingle line. We also install shingles from five other makers when a roof or a homeowner calls for one, to the same standard of installation. Tap a brand to see its shingles on the maker's own site.
GAF shingles are our primary shingle line. As a GAF Certified Plus™ Contractor, The Roof Shepherd can offer GAF enhanced warranties on qualifying roofing systems, including the Silver Pledge™ Limited Warranty and the System Plus Limited Warranty. Your quote shows whether your home qualifies.1, 2 The warranties guide in the Learning Center compares them.
1 Contractors enrolled in GAF certification programs are not employees or agents of GAF, and GAF does not control or otherwise supervise these independent businesses. Contractors may receive benefits, such as loyalty rewards points and discounts on marketing tools from GAF for participating in the program and offering GAF enhanced warranties, which require the use of a minimum amount of GAF products. What each brand is known for
GAF
GAF calls itself North America's largest roofing and waterproofing manufacturer, and calls Timberline HDZ its number one selling shingle. GAF offers a standard limited warranty and enhanced tiers above it. GAF is the primary shingle line The Roof Shepherd installs.
TAMKO
TAMKO builds the Heritage series. Heritage IR is its impact-rated line and carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, the highest class in that test. Always confirm which Heritage line a bid names.
IKO
IKO's architectural shingle is Cambridge. Its performance lines are Dynasty and Nordic. Nordic uses polymer modified asphalt, carries a Class 4 impact rating and has a 130 mile per hour limited wind warranty.
Malarkey
Every Malarkey shingle uses the company's rubberized, polymer modified asphalt, which it calls NEX. Highlander carries a Class 3 impact rating and Vista carries Class 4.
Owens Corning
Owens Corning's architectural shingle line is Duration. Duration STORM carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating.
CertainTeed
CertainTeed's architectural shingle is Landmark. It comes with a lifetime limited transferable warranty that includes 10 years of SureStart protection.
Most enhanced warranty tiers require a contractor certified by that maker. We are a GAF Certified Plus™ Contractor. Before you choose a brand, ask us which warranty your roof would get with each one. An impact rating is a lab test result. It is not a warranty against hail damage.
Our Primary Line
Five GAF shingle lines, compared
GAF is our primary shingle line. Every shingle below carries GAF’s lifetime limited warranty on manufacturing defects. Wind, algae and impact ratings differ by line, and the larger warranties depend on the accessories used and the installer’s GAF status.
Timberline NS
GAF’s entry architectural shingle. It carries a 10 year StainGuard algae warranty. It is not built with LayerLock, so the WindProven wind warranty does not apply, and it is the one Timberline shingle the Golden Pledge tier leaves out.
Timberline HDZ
GAF calls it its number one selling shingle. It is built with LayerLock, so with 4 qualifying GAF accessories it qualifies for the WindProven wind warranty, which has no maximum wind speed. It carries a 25 year StainGuard Plus algae warranty.
Timberline UHDZ
Built with LayerLock and eligible for WindProven like HDZ, with a longer 30 year StainGuard Plus PRO algae warranty. It is eligible for GAF’s enhanced warranty tiers when installed by a GAF certified contractor.
Timberline AS II
GAF’s impact resistant line, made with SBS modified asphalt and rated UL 2218 Class 4, the highest class in that lab test. GAF states it is not warranted to withstand hail damage. It is WindProven eligible and carries a 25 year StainGuard Plus algae warranty.
Camelot II
A GAF designer shingle, which GAF’s own chart prices above the Timberline lines it lists. It carries a 25 year StainGuard Plus algae warranty. The chart does not list LayerLock for it, so the WindProven wind warranty does not apply.
Three Common Mistakes
What homeowners consistently get wrong about roofing decisions.
Most regret starts with one estimate, no records, and urgency mistaken for certainty.
Three patterns behind most roof decisions
Most roofing decisions are made under pressure, after a storm, after a contractor walk, or when a leak appears. Three patterns account for the majority of homeowner regret in the roofing market:
Relying on one estimate
Any single scope, ours included, is a business proposal, not a plain condition assessment. Documentation gives you a baseline before estimates arrive, so you know what is actually damaged.
Skipping documentation
Undocumented damage is unverifiable damage. Photos, notes, and organized condition records are what separate a homeowner with options from one without them, especially in insurance and dispute contexts.
Confusing urgency with certainty
Storm chasers and high-pressure contractors operate on urgency. Find out what is actually damaged, and how badly, before you agree to any repair, not after.

Google Reviews
Homeowner Reviews
These are verified Google reviews from Texas homeowners we’ve served.
Great experience with David and his roofing company. They found the source of the leak, and got it fixed within a couple of hours. Professional, honest, and easy to work with. I'd definitely recommend them.
Owner Response
Tufan, thank you for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful review. I’m glad we were able to quickly identify the source of the roof leak and complete the repair within a couple of hours.
Roof leaks can be deceptive, so finding the actual entry point and correcting the underlying issue is always the priority rather than simply treating the visible symptom. I appreciate you trusting us with your roof repair in Round Rock, Texas, and especially appreciate your comments about our professionalism, honesty and communication.
Thank you again for the recommendation and for giving The Roof Shepherd the opportunity to help protect your home.
These guys helped us through a difficult insurance situation and made sure to walk us through things at every step. After final approval, the did the work, putting on a high-quality roof, in less than a day and left the area spotless. They did a wonderful job and I would certainly recommend them to others.
Owner Response
Jim, thank you for trusting me to serve as The Roof Shepherd throughout what became an almost 14-month appraisal and insurance process.
After at least four adjuster inspections and continued disagreement over the need for a full roof replacement, I remained committed to documenting the obvious hail damage, standing beside you, and helping you pursue the proper resolution. Situations like this are exactly why I take the “Shepherd” role seriously.
Once the replacement was approved, our installation team completed your Round Rock, Texas roof replacement in less than a day and left the property spotless. Your new system includes GAF Timberline UHDZ Class 4 shingles in Weathered Wood, a GAF Golden Pledge Limited Warranty, properly configured turbine ventilation, and all-metal roofing accessories rather than plastic components that can become vulnerable in the Texas heat.
I sincerely appreciate your patience throughout the process, your trust in me, and your recommendation. It was an honor to stand with you and help bring this project to the finish line.
David, The Roof Shepherd
David inspected my roof and provided valuable information. I told him from the beginning that I just wanted the inspection done, and although he knew that I wouldn't likely buy a new roof he came out anyways. He did inform me of certain issues that I should keep an eye for. Once the next storm hits I know who I will call. Thanks for the inspection, advice and guidance.
Owner Response
Leo, thank you for trusting me with the commercial roof evaluation in Georgetown, Texas. My goal was to give you a clear understanding of the metal roof’s current condition without pressuring you into work that was not immediately necessary.
We reviewed three practical options: replacing and resecuring the existing fasteners, applying a commercial roof coating system, or installing a new standing-seam metal roof. Each option has different advantages, limitations, maintenance requirements and long-term costs, so it was important to explain the pros and cons clearly.
I appreciate the opportunity to provide the inspection and guidance. When the property needs another evaluation or you are ready to move forward, The Roof Shepherd will be here to help.

Roofing FAQs
What is The Roof Shepherd’s role in a roof replacement?
The Roof Shepherd provides the inspection, condition documentation, material guidance, and the installation itself. The Roof Shepherd team does the job anywhere in Texas, from start to finish. The Roof Shepherd runs the process and ensures the homeowner understands what is being replaced and why before any work begins.
What is the difference between a roofing inspection and an estimate?
An inspection explains visible condition. An estimate prices a contractor’s proposed scope of work. Getting documentation before an estimate means the homeowner is not relying on the contractor to both assess the condition and price the fix.
How old does a roof need to be before replacement makes sense?
Asphalt shingles in Texas typically show significant weathering between 15 and 20 years depending on material quality, installation, and storm history. Age alone is not a replacement trigger. Granule loss, curling, exposed substrate, or persistent leak areas are the practical indicators.
Do I need to be home during a roof condition review?
Interior access is needed for ceiling stain, attic moisture, or ventilation concerns. Exterior-only reviews can proceed with the homeowner absent. Contact The Roof Shepherd to discuss what is appropriate for your situation.
Does The Roof Shepherd offer warranties on roofing work?
Yes. The Roof Shepherd LLC gives a written workmanship warranty: 5 years on roofs steeper than 2:12, and 2 years on sections at 2:12 or flatter. The shingle maker warrants the materials separately, and we register that warranty for you. Enhanced manufacturer tiers depend on the installer’s certification, so ask which tier your job qualifies for.
What is the most common roof leak source in Texas?
Penetrations are the most common leak source: pipe boots, vent flashings, chimney step flashing, and roof-to-wall transitions. A roof with intact shingles can still leak through a failed pipe boot. Any leak investigation should start with penetrations, not just shingle surface condition.
