Manufacturer Rules
What James Hardie says about painting its siding
Primed boards get painted within 180 days, with 100% acrylic topcoats, never oil or stain.
The installation requirements
Hardie writes the rules down. Its installation requirements say: “DO NOT use stain, oil/alkyd base paint, or powder coating on James Hardie® Products. Factory-primed James Hardie products must be painted within 180 days of installation. 100% acrylic topcoats are recommended.”
Why it matters for warranty
Siding warranties have conditions. A paint system the siding maker did not recommend can give a warranty company a reason to deny a claim. Read your own siding warranty, and keep the paint product names from the job with your house records.
Prefinished Boards
Repainting ColorPlus prefinished siding
ColorPlus boards normally need no new primer, and touch-up paint from others is not covered.
Repaint, usually without primer
ColorPlus comes painted at the factory. Hardie’s guidance says repriming is normally not necessary and 100% acrylic topcoats are recommended when it is repainted. Its finish warranty also says to use a good quality 100% acrylic paint and to follow the paint maker’s directions.
Touch-up limits
Small touch-ups have a catch. Hardie says it does not warrant third party touch-up or paints used as touch-up on ColorPlus products. If your siding is still under its finish warranty, read it before anyone touches up a scratch.
Where It Fails
Where fiber cement paint jobs fail
Joints, cut ends and board bottoms near the ground let water in and push paint off.
Joints and cut edges
Water finds the edges. Butt joints, cut ends and the gaps around windows and trim are where paint and caulk break down first. Failed caulk lets water wick into the board edge. A repaint should start with new sealant at every open joint.
Splashback and gutters
Low boards stay wet. Boards close to the ground or under an overflowing gutter take the most water. Fix the overflow and the splash before paint, or the bottom courses peel first. Our siding service handles damaged boards before the painting starts.
Paint Choice
Paints that fit fiber cement
Both of the brands we use make 100% acrylic exterior paints that match the Hardie rule.
What to look for on the label
Look for 100% acrylic. Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint Exterior is listed as 100% acrylic on its data sheet, and Benjamin Moore Regal Select Exterior and Aura Exterior are listed as 100% acrylic on theirs. Our brand comparison lays out the product lines side by side.
Common Questions
Questions homeowners ask
Can you paint Hardie board?
Yes. James Hardie expects its primed boards to be painted, and says factory primed products must be painted within 180 days of installation, with 100% acrylic topcoats recommended.
What kind of paint should you use on fiber cement siding?
A 100% acrylic exterior paint. Hardie’s installation requirements say not to use stain, oil or alkyd base paint, or powder coating on its products.
Do you need to prime ColorPlus siding before repainting?
Hardie says repriming is normally not necessary when ColorPlus is repainted, and recommends 100% acrylic topcoats.
Does painting Hardie siding void the warranty?
Painting with the recommended paint is expected. The risk comes from using a paint type Hardie says not to use, or touching up ColorPlus with third party paint, which Hardie does not warrant. Read your own warranty for its exact terms.
How long does paint last on fiber cement in Texas?
It depends on sun, color and how well the joints are kept sealed. Fiber cement does not rot like wood, so the paint usually fails at the caulk and edges first.
