The short version

  • Cabinets are cleaned, sanded and primed before any color goes on, because grease and gloss block adhesion.
  • Benjamin Moore recommends sanding with 100 to 150 grit and using a primer, not a lacquer based one, under its Advance paint.
  • Benjamin Moore says Advance can take up to 30 days to reach full hardness.
  • Doors and shelves need gentle use for the first days while the paint cures.

Direct Answer

Can kitchen cabinets be painted?

Yes, when the boxes and doors are sound and the job uses cabinet prep and a hard enamel.1 min read

Yes, with the right prep and paint

Most cabinets can be painted. Solid wood, wood veneer and painted cabinets all take paint well when they are degreased, sanded and primed first, then finished with an enamel made for cabinets and trim. Cabinets with peeling laminate or water swollen boxes are the exception, and are covered under paint, reface or replace below.

Process

How cabinets are painted, step by step

Remove, clean, sand, prime, then thin enamel coats with light sanding in between.1 min read

Remove and label

Doors and drawers come off. Hardware is removed and every door is labeled so it goes back where it came from. Painting doors flat gives a smoother finish than painting them on the hinges.

Clean the grease

Kitchen cabinets carry grease. Paint will not stick to it, so every surface is degreased and rinsed before sanding.

Sand and prime

Sanding gives the primer a grip. Benjamin Moore suggests a medium grit, 100 to 150, to scuff the surface, then its Fresh Start primer, and it warns not to use a lacquer based primer under Advance. Sherwin-Williams lists Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel as a urethane modified alkyd, a hard finish made for trim and cabinets.

Thin coats, sanded between

Two thin coats beat one thick one. Benjamin Moore suggests sanding between coats with 220 grit, and its Advance data sheet lists a 16 hour recoat time.

Patience

Dry is not the same as cured

Paint can feel dry in hours but take weeks to reach full hardness, so go easy at first.1 min read

What the data sheet says

Cabinet paint keeps hardening. Benjamin Moore’s Advance data sheet says it could take up to 30 days to reach optimum hardness and final sheen, and its data sheets say not to return shelves or tabletops to heavy use for at least 3 to 5 days for the semi-gloss and 5 to 7 days for the satin. Doors can be rehung sooner, but slamming them and stacking heavy dishes should wait.

What to Expect

What a cabinet painting job looks like

Counters and floors are covered, doors are painted flat, and the boxes are painted in place.1 min read

Protection and setup

The kitchen gets covered first. Counters, floors and appliances are masked, and the space is ventilated. Doors and drawer fronts are taken to a work area and painted flat on racks, while the cabinet boxes are painted where they hang.

Back together

Reassembly is part of the job. Hinges and pulls go back on, doors are adjusted so the gaps line up, and any nicks from handling are touched up. Benjamin Moore suggests letting the paint dry at least 24 hours, and says two or three days is even better.

Decision

Paint, reface or replace?

Paint suits sound boxes and doors, while damaged boxes or a new layout point to replacement.1 min read

How to decide

Condition and layout decide it. If the cabinet boxes are solid and you like the layout, paint changes the look for far less than new cabinets. Swollen particle board near the sink, broken frames, or a kitchen you want rearranged point to refacing or replacement instead. Cabinet painting is priced by door and drawer count at a walkthrough, through our interior painting service.

Common Questions

Questions homeowners ask

Do you have to sand cabinets before painting?

Yes, lightly. Benjamin Moore suggests 100 to 150 grit to scuff the surface so primer can grip, after the grease is cleaned off.

What paint is best for kitchen cabinets?

A hard enamel made for cabinets and trim, such as Benjamin Moore Advance or Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel, over the primer the maker recommends.

How long does cabinet paint take to cure?

Benjamin Moore says Advance could take up to 30 days to reach full hardness. Its data sheets say to keep shelves from heavy use for at least 3 to 5 days for the semi-gloss and 5 to 7 days for the satin.

Is it cheaper to paint or replace kitchen cabinets?

Painting sound cabinets costs far less than replacing them. Replacement makes sense when the boxes are damaged or the layout has to change.
