The Best Time to Paint a House Exterior in Texas

In Texas the main risk to fresh exterior paint is heat, not cold. This guide gives the temperature and moisture rules straight from the paint makers’ own data sheets, and the months and hours that fit them in Round Rock, Dallas and Houston.

The short version

  • Spring and fall give the widest painting windows in Texas, and summer work belongs in the morning shade.
  • Sherwin-Williams Duration and Benjamin Moore Aura exterior paints can go on at 35°F, but the wall must be at least 5 degrees above the dew point.
  • Aura lists a top surface temperature of 100°F, and a west wall in July sun can pass that.
  • Painters should follow the shade around the house so no wall is painted in direct afternoon sun.

Direct Answer

When is the best time to paint a house in Texas?

Spring and fall are best, and summer painting should follow the shade early in the day.1 min read

Spring and fall

Mild months give the widest window. From about March to May and again from late September to November, most days in Round Rock, Dallas and Houston fall inside the paint makers’ temperature ranges for the whole working day. Summer painting still works, but the crew has to start early and keep the paint out of direct sun.

Why heat matters more than cold here

Texas winters are short. NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals put the average January low at 41.8°F at Austin Camp Mabry, 36.1°F at DFW Airport and 43.7°F at Houston Bush Intercontinental, while July highs average 94.5°F to 96.6°F at those stations. Cold days are few. Hot surfaces are the everyday problem.

Manufacturer Data

The temperature and moisture rules on the paint can

The air, the wall and the paint must be above 35°F and the wall 5 degrees above the dew point.1 min read

Sherwin-Williams Duration

The data sheet is the rule book. Sherwin-Williams tells painters to make sure “the air, surface, and material temperature are above 35°F and at least 5° above the dew point,” not to paint if temperatures may drop below 35°F within 48 hours, and not to paint in direct sun. It also warns that above 80°F the paint sets up quickly.

Benjamin Moore Aura

Benjamin Moore sets both ends. The Aura Exterior data sheet lists a surface temperature during application of 35°F minimum and 100°F maximum. Benjamin Moore’s own advice is to avoid painting in direct sunlight and to check a sunny wall with an infrared thermometer, because a dark wall in the sun can be much hotter than the air.

The dew point rule, in plain words

Dew point is the temperature where moisture forms on a surface. If the wall is colder than 5 degrees above it, a thin film of water can form under the fresh paint and weaken it. That is why early morning painting on a humid Houston day may need to wait for the walls to dry and warm.

Method

Follow the shade around the house

Paint each wall after the sun leaves it, so paint does not go on a hot, sunny surface.1 min read

The order a good crew uses

Each wall gets painted in its own shade. A USDA paint study advises not painting above 90°F and following the sun around the house: the east side late in the morning, the south side in the middle of the afternoon, and the west side late in the afternoon unless it is in full sun. On a Texas summer day that often means the west wall is painted early, before the sun reaches it.

Why it matters

Paint on a hot wall dries too fast. It can show lap marks, poor flow and a weak bond. The USDA lab also notes that latex should go on at 50°F or above and stay above that for 24 hours. A crew that plans its day by the sun avoids most of these problems.

Austin area summers are hottest, DFW winters are coldest, and Houston is the most humid of the three.1 min read

How the three metros differ

Each metro has its own limit. The table uses NOAA’s official 1991 to 2020 normals. The dew point averages come from NOAA’s hourly normals, which are published for DFW and Houston but not for either Austin station.

Planning

What has to happen before the painting date

Roof and gutter work, wood repair and a full dry after washing all come before paint.1 min read

Roof work first

A roof replacement drops debris and puts ladders against the walls. If a new roof is coming, schedule it before the paint. Our exterior painting page explains how the two jobs are sequenced when we do both.

Wash, then let it dry

Walls are washed before paint to remove chalk, dust and mildew. Wood and stucco hold water after washing, so the crew waits until the surface is dry before priming. In humid weeks that can mean an extra day.

Common Questions

Questions homeowners ask

What is the best month to paint a house in Texas?

Spring, about March to May, and fall, about late September to November, give the most days inside the paint makers’ temperature ranges. Summer works with early starts and shade, and winter works on mild days if temperatures stay above the paint’s minimum for the next 48 hours.

Is it too hot to paint outside in a Texas summer?

Not if the crew works in the shade. Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior lists a 100°F maximum surface temperature, and a sunny west wall in July can pass that. Painting each wall after the sun leaves it keeps the paint within its limits.

Can you paint a house in Texas in winter?

Often, yes. Duration and Aura exterior paints list a 35°F minimum, and Duration says not to paint if temperatures may drop below 35°F within 48 hours. The USDA lab advises 50°F for ordinary latex paint and notes some paints are made to go on colder, so the data sheet for the exact product decides. Many Texas winter days meet both.

How long after rain can you paint the exterior?

Wait until the surface is dry. Wood and stucco hold water after rain or washing, and the surface must also be at least 5 degrees above the dew point.

Does humidity affect exterior paint?

Yes. High humidity slows drying and raises the dew point, which is why Houston mornings can be too damp to start. The 5 degree dew point rule on the data sheet is the test.
