What we do in framing
All Aspects of Framing
We do all aspects of framing. Tell us what you need built or repaired, and we will explain plainly what it involves before any work starts.
Code and City Rules
The work follows the International Residential Code and the local city’s requirements. Some structural changes need an engineered design or a permit first. The City of Round Rock, for example, says structural modifications such as wall removal require an engineered design.
Plain Language
The parts of a house frame
Walls
A wall frame is made of upright studs standing on a bottom plate and capped with top plates. A header spans the top of each door and window opening. In a wall that holds up weight, the header passes that weight to the studs on each side.
Floors and Ceilings
Joists are the level boards that carry a floor or a ceiling. Beams and posts carry the joists where a wall does not.
Rafters and Trusses
Rafters or trusses give the top of the house its shape and carry its weight down to the walls. Rafters need ceiling joists, ties or a ridge beam so they do not push the walls outward. The deck is fastened on top, then the underlayment, then the shingles or metal.
Engineered Parts
Trusses and engineered beams and joists are made to a design. Under the building code, a truss may not be cut, notched or drilled without the approval of a licensed design professional, such as an engineer. Engineered beams and joists may be cut or drilled only as the maker’s instructions or a design professional allow.
When the Framing Is Under a Roof
Roof framing found during a re-roof
It shows when the old roof comes off
Rotted or damaged roof framing and decking usually show only when the old roof comes off. It is photographed and explained before it is repaired.
One record for both trades
When framing is part of a roof replacement, the framing repair goes into the same photo record as the roof.
