Eight guides on the work that meets the roof, written for homeowners and sourced to the building code, Texas law, state agencies and the manufacturers. Start with the question you have.

The short version
- A roof replacement on a solar home means detach and reset, with the electrical work under a licensed electrical contractor.
- Siding and roofs share every storm, and hail on the walls is a reason to have the roof recorded too.
- Fascia, rafters and decking are found during a re-roof, photographed, and priced by the piece.
- Asphalt shingle roofs are never pressure washed; the shingle industry says so in writing.

Outside the House
Siding, soffit and fascia
Walls take the same storms the roof does. Start with repair or replace, read the hail guide if a storm is the reason you are here, and the soffit and fascia guide if a gutter is pulling away. Our siding service covers all three.
Three guides on the walls and the roof edge: repair or replace, hail damage, and the boards that carry the gutter.
Siding Repair or Replacement: How to Decide
Damage on a few panels usually means repair; brittle siding, long term moisture stains or rot underneath usually means replacement.
Hail Damage to Siding: What to Look For and What to Do
Vinyl cracks and holes, fiber cement chips and cracks at edges, wood dents and splits, and soft metal dents.
Soffit and Fascia: What They Do, Why They Rot, and How They Are Repaired
Fascia is the vertical board at the roof edge; soffit is the horizontal underside of the overhang.
Structure and Interior
Solar, framing, decking and drywall
Panels sit on the roof, so a re-roof starts with them. The guide covers who does each step, the rapid shutdown rule, the flashing at every mount and the per panel planning range. When you are ready, our solar detach and reset page explains what we coordinate. The wood under a roof is found when the old roof comes off, and the ceiling shows the leak last. These two guides explain sistering, decking allowances, and the order that keeps a drywall repair from being done twice. See our framing and drywall services when you want the work done.
Three guides on what a re-roof touches: the panels on top, the wood under the shingles and the ceiling below.
Solar Panel Detach and Reset During a Roof Replacement
Detach and reset means the panels and racking come off before tear-off, the roof is replaced, and the array is reinstalled and tested.
Rafter and Roof Deck Repair: Sistering, Decking and What the Code Requires
A damaged rafter is usually sistered: a new board is fastened alongside it so the pair carries the load, not cut out and replaced.
Drywall Repair After a Roof Leak: The Order That Keeps You From Paying Twice
Fix the roof first, confirm it is dry, then repair the drywall, then paint. Any other order gets redone.
Cleaning and Collection
Pressure washing and rainwater
One guide says where a pressure washer does and does not belong, and names the roof as the place it never goes. The other is pure education on collecting rain off a Texas roof, with the law and the tax exemption. Our pressure washing page covers the cleaning we do.
Two guides on water: where high pressure belongs, and how a Texas roof becomes a rain catchment.
Pressure Washing Roofs and Siding: What Is Safe and What Wrecks the House
Never pressure wash an asphalt shingle roof. ARMA says not to use a power washer on it, because high pressure is likely to damage the roofing.
Rainwater Collection in Texas: What Your Roof Can Catch, and What the Law Says
A roof collects about 0.62 gallons per square foot per inch of rain in theory, before losses; a 2,000 square foot roof footprint with the 36.25 inch Austin Camp Mabry normal is about 45,000 gallons.
Our Home Services
What The Roof Shepherd does around the roof
Solar detach and reset, siding, soffit and fascia, framing, drywall and washing, documented first and done in order.
Solar detach and reset
We coordinate the removal and reinstallation of a solar array around a roof replacement, with the electrical work done by a licensed electrical contractor and every mount photographed before and after. It is not solar sales or new installation.
Siding, soffit, fascia and framing
We repair and replace siding, the trim and fascia around it, and the roof framing and decking a tear-off reveals, through our siding and framing services, with the condition documented before any work is scoped.
Drywall and cleaning
We repair drywall as its own trade, after the roof above it is dry, and we wash siding, concrete and fences with the method matched to the surface. We do not pressure wash roofs and we do not install rainwater systems.
Common Questions
Home Services questions, answered
Do you remove solar panels for a roof replacement?
Yes. We coordinate the detach and reset around the roof, with the electrical disconnect and reconnect done by a licensed electrical contractor. Check your lease or warranty first, because some systems require the provider’s own installer.
Do you repair siding, soffit and fascia?
Yes. Siding repair and replacement, with the soffit, fascia and trim that meet it, is its own service, and fascia is also replaced during roof work when the edge is open.
Can you fix a water stained ceiling?
Yes, after the roof above it is repaired and dry. Drywall is its own trade for us, and the repair waits for a dry cavity so it is not done twice.
Will you pressure wash my roof?
No. The shingle makers’ trade body says not to use a power washer on an asphalt roof, and the granule loss is permanent. We wash siding, concrete and fences, and we document roofs instead.
Do you install rainwater collection systems?
No. Our rainwater guide is education so you can plan one with a rainwater installer. We install and repair the roof and the gutters that feed it.
