Consistent dent patterns on soft metal surfaces are reliable hail indicators. Take photos with something for scale, a ruler, coin, or hand.

Recognizing hail impact across surface types

Asphalt Shingles

Random circular bruising, not a regular pattern. Areas where granules are displaced, exposing the darker asphalt mat beneath. Occasional soft spots where the impact has fractured the mat. Cracked shingles are possible from large hail but bruising is more common and less obvious at ground level.

Gutters & Soft Metals

Consistent circular dents of roughly uniform diameter. AC condenser tops are one of the most reliable hail size indicators, the soft metal records impact diameter clearly. Drip edge, vent caps, and metal trim also show impact. Pattern consistency is the tell, random dings from debris look different from systematic hail impact.

Painted Siding & Trim

Interior Staining

Ridge and hip caps

Ridge caps are the most exposed element and often the first to fail. Missing caps leave the ridge vulnerable to water infiltration. Photograph the full ridge length.

Fascia and soffit

Wind-driven debris and direct pressure damage fascia boards and soffit panels. Damage here often precedes or accompanies roof surface damage.

Flashing displacement

Step flashing, valley flashing, and pipe boot collars can shift under wind load. Even minor displacement creates a water pathway.

Straight-line winds from severe thunderstorms and tornadoes cause roofline separation, fascia damage, and sometimes catastrophic failure. What is a storm chaser contractor?

A storm chaser is a roofing contractor, often from out of state, who deploys to a market following a significant hail event. They work quickly, sign contracts aggressively, and move to the next market after the storm cycle ends. Warning signs: pressure to sign immediately, vague written scope, no verifiable local address, asking you to sign over insurance rights, or offering to waive, absorb or rebate your deductible, which is a crime in Texas.

Do I need a roof inspection after hail in Central Texas?

If hail fell on your street, yes, and the reason is that the damage that matters is usually invisible from the ground. A functional hail impact fractures the mat underneath the surface while the shingle still looks whole, and it will not leak for months or years. Central Texas heat then works on the fractured area faster than it works on the rest of the roof. The cheapest version of this is a dated condition record made before you call anyone, which costs nothing and is yours to keep whatever you decide afterwards.

How soon after a storm should I have my roof looked at?

Sooner is better, and the reason is specific rather than urgent-sounding. Wind lifts shingles and breaks their seal strips, and in Texas heat a lifted shingle lies back down and reseals within days, so the evidence of lifting disappears while the weakened seal stays weakened.
