Gutter Cleaning and Upkeep in Texas
Gutters in Texas fill on a different calendar than the rest of the country, because our biggest tree drops its leaves in spring. This guide covers when to clean, what a cleaning should include, how to do it safely, and the signs that what you have is a repair, not a cleaning.

The short version
- Clean after the live oaks drop in late winter and early spring, and again after the fall leaf drop and the first storms.
- A cleaning clears the trough and every outlet, flushes the downspouts, and checks the fall and the hangers.
- Texas DSHS lists clear gutters among the steps that stop mosquitoes breeding on your property.
- Use a ladder at a quarter of its length from the wall, extended 3 feet above the gutter, with three points of contact, or hire it done.

Direct Answer
How often should gutters be cleaned in Texas?
Twice a year on most tree covered lots, timed to the spring live oak drop and the fall drop, and after any big storm.
Twice a year, on the Texas calendar
Twice a year on most lots with trees, after the leaves drop. Around Round Rock and Austin the live oak sheds its old leaves as new ones come in, typically from late January through spring, per Texas A&M’s plant lab. Pecans, cedar elms and other hardwoods drop in fall. A cleaning in March and another in November or December catches both.
And after storms
A hard spring storm strips leaves and twigs onto the roof all at once, and the next rain carries them to the outlets. After a storm with wind or hail, look at the gutters from the ground. Water spilling over the front edge at an outlet means it is blocked.
The Work
What a gutter cleaning should include
Trough, outlets, downspouts, a flush with water, and a check of fall, hangers and fascia, with photos.
The steps
Scoop the trough by hand, clear the outlet screens or strainers, and run water from a hose until it comes out the bottom of every downspout. A downspout that does not flow is cleared from the bottom elbow up, since that is where it clogs. Then watch the water: it should move to the outlet and leave nothing standing. Standing water means the run has lost its fall, which is a repair.
Photos and a note
A cleaning is a chance to look. Heavy shingle grit in the trough points to a roof that is aging. A sagging run points to hangers or fascia. A downspout that drains at the slab points to a foundation risk. Every cleaning we do is photographed with a plain language note, so the homeowner sees what was found and not a surprise quote. The gutter service page describes it.
With guards
Guards change the job. Debris that sits on top of a guard, especially in inside corners and under valleys, is brushed off. The trough underneath is checked at the outlets, where fine grit still collects. Our gutter guards guide explains what each kind of guard lets through.
What Clogs Cost
What a clogged gutter does to a house
Overflow rots fascia, soaks siding, lands at the foundation and breeds mosquitoes.
Fascia and siding
Water that overflows the back of a gutter runs down the fascia board and behind it. Fascia rots from the top down, and the first sign is a gutter pulling loose because the screws have nothing to hold. Overflow off the front soaks siding and the ground at the wall.
The foundation
A clogged downspout turns a gutter into a dam that spills at one spot. On clay soil that spot is a foundation problem. Our drainage and foundations guide explains why.
Mosquitoes
Standing water in a gutter is a mosquito nursery. Texas DSHS notes that mosquitoes can breed in as little as a tablespoon of water and lists keeping gutters clear of debris and standing water among the steps to stop breeding on your property.
Ladders
Cleaning gutters safely, or deciding not to
OSHA ladder rules fit home use: the quarter length setup, 3 feet above the gutter, three points of contact.
The ladder rules
OSHA’s portable ladder card is written for workplaces and the physics are the same at home. Set the base a quarter of the ladder’s working length from the wall. Extend it at least 3 feet above the point of support. Keep three points of contact, two hands and a foot or two feet and a hand, while climbing. Do not stand on the top three rungs of an extension ladder. Do not lean the ladder on the gutter itself, which dents it and can let the ladder slide.
When to hire it
A two story eave, a steep slope below the ladder, a wet day, or anyone who is not steady on a ladder is a reason to hire the cleaning. A ladder fall is the injury to avoid, and a cleaning is a small job to get hurt on.
Know the Difference
When it is a repair, not a cleaning
Standing water, a loose run, a leaking corner or a crushed downspout are repairs, and a reseal is often all they need.
The repairs that look like clogs
Water standing in a clean gutter is lost fall: the run needs rehanging. A gutter pulling away from the house is failed fasteners or rotted fascia. A drip at an inside corner or end cap is a sealant joint that has opened. A downspout crushed at the bottom restricts flow and is replaced. None of these is fixed by cleaning, and most are fixed without replacing the gutter. We say so when a refasten and reseal is all a run needs.
Common Questions
Questions homeowners ask
How often should I clean my gutters in Texas?
Twice a year on most lots with trees: once after the live oak drop in late winter and spring, and once after the fall drop. Add a check after any storm with heavy wind or hail.
Why do live oaks drop leaves in spring?
They are not true evergreens. Texas A&M’s plant diagnostic lab explains that live oaks shed old leaves as new ones emerge, typically starting in late January and February. That is why Texas gutters fill in March.
Can clogged gutters cause mosquitoes?
Yes. Standing water in a gutter breeds them, and Texas DSHS lists keeping gutters clear of debris and standing water among the steps to prevent mosquito breeding on your property.
How much does gutter cleaning cost?
Gutter cleaning has no set per foot rate in our pricing register and is priced on a walkthrough, because the height, the tree cover and the condition of the run decide the time it takes.
Is it safe to clean gutters myself?
On a one story house with a stable ladder set a quarter of its length from the wall and extended 3 feet above the gutter, many homeowners do. On a two story house, a wet day or uneven ground, hire it.
