The short version

  • Vinyl siding can be painted, as long as the color does not make it too hot.
  • Sherwin-Williams says darker colors absorb more heat, which can make vinyl warp and buckle.
  • Light reflectance value, or LRV, runs from 0 for black to 100 for white and tells you how much light a color reflects.
  • VinylSafe colors from Sherwin-Williams are made to resist warping on sound vinyl siding.

Direct Answer

Can you paint vinyl siding?

Yes, if the color stays light enough that the sun does not overheat the plastic.1 min read

Yes, with care

Vinyl takes paint. The risk is heat, not adhesion. Vinyl is plastic, and plastic softens when it gets hot. Sherwin-Williams says plainly that darker colors absorb more heat, causing the plastic vinyl to warp, buckle and distort.

The Science

Why dark paint can warp vinyl siding

Dark colors absorb sunlight, heat the vinyl, and can make it buckle on sunny walls.1 min read

Dark colors run hot

Color decides temperature. Sherwin-Williams’ warped siding guide says dark paint tends to absorb the heat of the sun and pass it to the surface underneath. On a south or west wall in a Texas summer, that is a lot of heat.

What LRV means

LRV is a number on the color card. Benjamin Moore defines light reflectance value as the percentage of light a surface reflects, from 0 for absolute black to 100 for pure white. Its White Dove, for example, has an LRV of 83.16. A higher LRV reflects more sunlight and stays cooler.

Products

VinylSafe colors and how they work

Sherwin-Williams offers about 100 VinylSafe colors made to resist warping on sound vinyl.1 min read

A palette made for vinyl

Some colors are built for this. Sherwin-Williams says its VinylSafe line offers 100 color options, including a limited selection of darker colors formulated to resist warping or buckling when applied to sound, stable vinyl siding. Choosing from that palette is the simplest way to lower the risk.

Prep for vinyl

Read your siding warranty first, because it may set conditions on painting. Vinyl still needs prep. It is washed, rinsed and dried, and any cracked or loose panels are fixed first. Damaged panels belong to our siding service before the paint goes on.

How It Is Done

How a vinyl siding repaint is done

Wash, rinse and dry the siding, fix loose panels, then two coats of a paint made for vinyl.1 min read

Step by step

The order is simple. The siding is washed to remove chalk, dirt and mildew, rinsed well, and left to dry. Loose or cracked panels are refastened or replaced. Then the paint goes on in two thin, even coats, out of direct sun, using a product and color the paint maker lists for vinyl. Primer is used only where the paint maker calls for it.

What to check afterward

Look again after the first hot spell. Panels should still lie flat and slide freely at their joints. If a panel bows on a sunny wall, the color or the fastening needs attention before the problem spreads.

Decision

Paint the vinyl, or replace it?

Painting refreshes sound vinyl, but warped, cracked or loose panels need repair or replacement.1 min read

How to decide

Condition decides it. If the panels are straight and firmly attached and you want a new color, painting is the lighter choice. If panels are already warped, cracked or loose, paint will not fix them. Our guide to how long exterior paint lasts explains what to expect from any repaint in Texas sun.

Common Questions

Questions homeowners ask

Can you paint vinyl siding a dark color?

Only with care. Sherwin-Williams says darker colors absorb more heat and can make vinyl warp and buckle. Its VinylSafe palette includes a limited set of darker colors made to resist that on sound, stable siding.

What is LRV in paint?

Light reflectance value, the share of light a color reflects, from 0 for black to 100 for white. Higher numbers reflect more sun and run cooler.

Does painting vinyl siding last?

On clean, sound siding with a light enough color, yes. The usual failure is warping from heat when the color is too dark, not peeling.

Should I paint or replace my vinyl siding?

Paint straight, firmly attached siding when you want a new color. Replace or repair panels that are already warped, cracked or loose.
