There is an order to checking a property after a storm, and it starts on the ground. Soft metals record hail better than anything else on the building: gutters, downspouts, drip edge, valley metal, roof vents, furnace and heater caps, and the air conditioning condenser fins in the side yard. They dent at smaller stone sizes than a shingle bruises at, they hold the dent permanently, and they can be photographed without anyone climbing anything. Window screens, fence tops, deck rails and a mailbox tell the same story. If the soft metals around a house are clean, the odds of meaningful roof damage are low, and if they are covered, the roof is worth a close look.
