What this video shows

What this shows: A penetration leak on a Lakeway roof, showing where water gets in and what the documentation looks like. It stays on the site because penetrations are where many leaks begin.

Water does not enter a roof where it appears inside the house. It enters at the highest compromised point and then travels, along the top of the underlayment, down a rafter, across the top plate, until it finds somewhere to drop, and that can be a long way from the entry. This is why finding a leak is an exercise in working uphill from the stain and why penetrations get checked first: a pipe, a vent, a flue or a fan curb is a hole cut in the roof that is only watertight because a piece of metal and a sequence of laps make it so. Sealant on top of a penetration is a repair with a service life measured in a couple of years. Correct flashing is a repair with a service life measured in decades.
