What this video shows
What this shows: Stove pipe flashing on a Cedar Park roof, one of the first places water finds its way in. We keep it because this leak point is common and often missed.
Penetrations leak long before fields of shingles do, and pipe flashings lead the list because most of them are sealed with a rubber collar that has a shorter service life than the roof it sits on. In Central Texas sun that collar typically starts cracking around the pipe somewhere between eight and twelve years, well inside the life of a thirty year shingle. The failure is small, slow and almost always found in the attic before it is found on the ceiling. A lead or a metal collar outlasts rubber by a wide margin, and replacing a boot during a roof is a trivial cost while replacing a ceiling is not.
