National First Responders Day: A No-Ladder Home Check for Shift Families in Round Rock
Today, October 28, is National First Responders Day. To the people who answer the call, and to the families who keep the house running while they do: thank you.
I spent more than 16 years in law enforcement before I built The Roof Shepherd, so I know what a shift schedule does to a household. The person on duty is often not home when the storm rolls through or the ceiling stain shows up. The partner at home ends up handling it alone, usually at the worst possible time.
So along with the thank you, here is something useful: a short home check anyone in the house can do from the ground and from inside. No ladder, no climbing.
GUIDES
A No-Ladder Home Check for Shift Families
- Walk the yard after a storm. Look for pieces of shingle, piles of granules at the downspout outlets, and dented gutters or downspouts. Note what you see before anyone cleans it up.
- Check the ceilings from inside. Look for new stains or bubbling paint, especially near bathroom fans, chimneys, skylights and the attic hatch.
- Watch the gutters during a rain. Water spilling over the front edge, or a gutter pulling away from the fascia board, means water is not being carried away from the house.
- Look at the paint on trim and fascia. Peeling paint and bare wood let water into the boards behind them. Caulk that has pulled away around windows and trim does the same.
- Take dated photos. Shoot from the same spot each time, so the photos show what changed and when you found it.
- Stay off the roof. A wet or hot roof is a fall hazard, and you should never have to climb to get an honest answer.
GUIDES
Make an "On Shift" Card for the Fridge
When something happens while your first responder is on duty, the person at home should not have to hunt for information. Put these on one card:
- Your insurance company's claim phone number and your policy number
- Your roofer's phone number
- Where the water shutoff and the breaker panel are
- Who to call for a tarp if water is coming in
Many insurance policies ask for prompt notice of damage. Read yours so you know what it asks, and write down the date you first noticed the damage.
Not sure whether it is damage?
Take the photos, write down the date, and ask. Not every mark on a roof is storm damage, and not every storm leaves damage behind. A documented inspection settles it either way.

A Separate Program for Military Homeowners
GAF, the shingle manufacturer, runs its own Roofs for Troops rebate this year. It is GAF's program, not ours, and it has its own rules:
- GAF offers eligible active duty members, honorably discharged veterans and retirees of the U.S. military a $250 rebate on a qualifying GAF roofing system with a GAF enhanced warranty installed by December 31, 2026, on a home the service member owns.
- The homeowner files the rebate claim with GAF, and GAF decides eligibility and handles payment. GAF's terms say the claim must be received within 90 days of the warranty issuance date on the warranty letter.
- First responder status alone does not make someone eligible for the GAF rebate.
- This program and our appreciation offer are separate, each with its own requirements. Nothing combines automatically. If you think both may apply, ask, and what applies to your project goes in writing.
Read GAF's full terms at gafroofsfortroops.com.
The Roof Shepherd LLC is a GAF Certified Plus™ Contractor¹ and can offer the System Plus Limited Warranty and the Silver Pledge™ Limited Warranty², which are among the enhanced warranties the rebate requires. We promote GAF programs only for homes within 100 miles of our Round Rock office.
¹ Contractors enrolled in GAF certification programs are not employees or agents of GAF, and GAF does not control or otherwise supervise these independent businesses. Contractors may receive benefits, such as loyalty rewards points and discounts on marketing tools from GAF for participating in the program and offering GAF enhanced warranties, which require the use of a minimum amount of GAF products. Your dealings with a Contractor, and any services they provide to you, are subject to the Contractor Terms of Use. Visit www.gaf.com/gaf-contractor-terms-of-use for details.
