Austin's hail record
Austin's hail record
The National Weather Service storm database holds 241 hail reports within ten miles of Austin since 2000, 77 of them at 1.75 inches or larger. The biggest stone on record is 4 inches, on May 14, 2008; the 2008 season was the worst with 17 large hail reports, 2023 was close behind with 16, and 2009 had 10. May and April are the peak months. Austin's size means a storm can hammer Circle C and miss Mueller, so the first question for any Austin roof is whether the hail actually reached your street on a given date. We check that against the record before anyone gets on a ladder.

Austin hail work on record
In October 2026 we completed a roof replacement on a north Austin home that began as a documented inspection and became an insurance claim; the homeowner's carrier reviewed the record and the roof was contracted in late September and finished in early October. One Austin homeowner wrote on Google about a replacement for his mother's home after a claim was repeatedly denied: the family chose to pay for the roof, we helped them pick an IKO Class 3 system to keep the cost manageable, and the work included decking repairs around a leaking chimney and a cricket the chimney never had. Another wrote that we inspected his roof, explained its condition and the replacement it would eventually need, and applied no pressure when he chose to wait. Those reviews are public on our reviews page and on Google.
Repair or Replace
When hail damage is a repair and when it is a roof
When hail damage is a repair and when it is a roof
Hail does three kinds of damage to an asphalt roof, and the repair answer follows from which one you have. Bruised soft metals (vents, flashing, gutters, pipe boot collars) with intact shingles: those parts get replaced, usually a $500 and up repair. Scattered strikes on one slope with the rest of the roof sound: a slope repair, if the shingle is still made and the roof is young enough to take new shingles beside old. Bruising on every slope, granules in the gutters and mat showing through: a replacement, because a bruised shingle has lost the granules that protect its mat and will fail early even if it does not leak today. The hail damage atlas shows what each looks like. Our report says which category your roof is in, with the photos that show why.
Insurance
What we do in an Austin hail claim, and what we do not
What we do in an Austin hail claim, and what we do not
We advise and educate you on your options and rights, document the roof, and submit documented supplements. We are not a public adjuster and never negotiate or settle a claim for you. If your carrier's first estimate misses items the roof needs, the documented supplement explains why each item should be covered, with the photographs and measurements behind it.
Texas Insurance Code Section 4102.163 says a contractor may not act as a public adjuster, or advertise to adjust claims, on property it works on or may work on. We also never offer to pay, waive or absorb your deductible: Texas Business and Commerce Code 27.02 requires the insured to pay the deductible and makes a contractor's offer to waive it an offense. The hail damage insurance guide walks through the whole process and your rights under Texas law.
Austin Rules
Austin's wildfire code can change a hail replacement
Austin's wildfire code can change a hail replacement
Austin is the only city in our footprint whose wildfire code reaches an ordinary re-roof. If your home is inside the city's mapped wildland urban interface, mostly west and southwest Austin, a job that replaces half or more of the roof needs a city permit, a Class A covering, specific valley and vent details and its own fee lines. Most homeowners there have never heard of it, and a hail replacement is exactly the job that triggers it. Outside the WUI, the city's published guidance treats an asphalt over asphalt reroof as exempt from a permit; confirm it for your address, because the city's own exemption list is what settles a close call. The city adopted the 2024 IRC effective July 10, 2025, with a 105 mph design wind speed and no ice barrier requirement. One Austin homeowner reviewed us for knowing the WUI rules most roofers in the metro were unaware of; the rules themselves are on our Austin WUI roof replacement page, quoted from the city.
The Answer
What hail repair and replacement cost in Austin
What hail repair and replacement cost in Austin
The inspection that documents the damage is $100, paid at the visit; call or text 512-575-5052; Austin is about 27 minutes from our Round Rock base, inside the first band of our fee ladder. Repairs start at $500. Replacement is priced per square installed at our published ranges, $545 to $670 for architectural asphalt and $600 to $735 for Class 4 impact resistant, with pitch, stories, complexity and decking moving the number. On an insurance claim the carrier's estimate sets the scope and your policy sets what you pay; what the roof costs does not change.
Common Questions
Questions homeowners in Austin ask about hail damage roof repair
How much does it cost to replace a roof from hail damage in Austin?
The roof costs what it costs regardless of who pays: per square installed, $545 to $670 for architectural asphalt and $600 to $735 for Class 4 in our published ranges, moved by pitch, stories, complexity and decking. On a claim, your policy and deductible decide your share; that is your carrier's determination, not ours.
Will insurance cover roof damage from hail in Austin?
Most homeowner policies cover sudden hail damage and none cover wear and age; the determination is your carrier's under your policy, and no roofer can promise it. We advise and educate you on your options and rights, document the roof, and submit documented supplements. We are not a public adjuster and never negotiate or settle a claim for you.
Can hail damage on a roof be repaired?
Yes when it is limited: bruised vents, flashing and gutters, or scattered strikes on one slope of a young roof. Bruising across every slope is a replacement, because bruised shingles have lost their protective granules and fail early even when they do not leak yet.
Does an Austin hail roof replacement need a permit?
Outside the wildland urban interface, not for asphalt over asphalt, with one exception the city lists: a job that replaces more than 128 square feet of decking needs a permit. Inside the mapped WUI, replacing half or more of the roof needs a city permit, a Class A covering and specific valley and vent details. Check your address on the city's WUI map first.
How soon after a hailstorm should I get the roof looked at?
Within days, not months. Policies have claim deadlines, evidence weathers, and a dated report taken soon after the storm is the record that holds up. The inspection is $100 in Austin, paid at the visit; call or text 512-575-5052.
