Source: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, Storm Events Database · Johnson County · 2000-2026 · within 10 miles of the Keene centroid. Counts are reported events, so they undercount: a stone that fell where nobody reported it is not in the record.
Checked October 23, 2026 against two feeds that do not share the archive's bias: radar hail signatures from the NEXRAD hail detection algorithm (NOAA NCEI Severe Weather Data Inventory, same 10 mile radius, 2000-2026), counted as days with a signature of one inch or larger, and the Storm Prediction Center's preliminary reports for the last 12 months, which are unreviewed and never a competing total. A radar day and a reported event are different units and are not expected to match: the archive needs a witness and undercounts, radar needs none and can flag hail that melted before it landed. What fell on one roof is settled by a documented inspection, not by any of these counts.

Damaging wind has been reported 1 time in the same period, most recently 60 mph on June 8, 2025. These are NOAA Storm Prediction Center preliminary reports covering September 23, 2024 to October 22, 2026. A report near a property confirms hail fell nearby. It does not confirm that any particular roof was damaged, and it is not a coverage determination.
About Keene
Local ground truth for Keene properties
Keene sits in Johnson County in North Texas, home to roughly 6,930 residents (Census Bureau estimate, 2024). The area rides the DFW hail alley, one of the most hail-struck metros in the country.
Roof age, by the census
How old the roofs in Keene are likely to be

When the houses went up
Keene has 2,629 housing units in the Census Bureau's latest five-year estimate. The median home was built in 1985. 79 percent were built before 2000 and 67 percent before 1990; 7 percent have been built since 2010. Half or more of the homes here predate 2000. An original asphalt-shingle roof from that era is at or past the 20-to-30-year service life typically cited for asphalt shingles, and many will already be on a second roof, which is worth confirming from a permit or a receipt rather than assuming.

Roof permits and code in Keene
What the city's own documents say about a re-roof permit and code here, and the date they were read.
What the city's documents show
Keene's published list of residential work exempt from permits does not include roofing, so a re-roof falls under the general permit rule. The city does not publish a separate re-roof fee.
Contractors must register with the city before getting a permit and carry at least $1,000,000 in general liability insurance. Keene adopted the 2018 International Residential Code by Ordinance 2021-625 on January 21, 2021.
Read at the city's own pages and code on October 14, 2026. The city's current document governs if it changes, so we confirm the rule for your address before work starts. Our permits and codes by city page explains how Texas cities set these rules.
Exterior & Painting
What Keene, TX homeowners should know about exterior work
Have the roof documented before exterior work, since fascia rot, loose gutters and trim damage often show up.
Local Paint & Exterior Note
Keene mixes older homes near its center with newer subdivisions. Older frame and brick homes need routine exterior paint and wood care, while newer builds focus on trim and flashing.
Sequence Matters
Get the roof documented first. Painting and exterior repairs come after. Condition notes from a roof visit often surface fascia rot, gutter separation, and trim damage that affect painting scope and cost before a single brush stroke is applied.

Homeowner Reviews
I happened to stumble across David while out walking my dogs and I am so glad I did! Godley had just been hit with a hail storm and needed someone to take a look at my roof to check for damage. David came the very next day to inspect. He showed me pictures of the damage and answered any questions I had. Thankfully the damage was not extensive that a roof replacement was needed but if indeed a replacement was needed I would’ve felt at ease with David completing the process. I especially liked his professionalism and knowledge. Should I ever need anyone for roofing services I will definitely be calling him!
Owner Response
Thank you, Dominique, for trusting The Roof Shepherd with your roof inspection after the hailstorm in Godley, Texas. I appreciate your kind words and am glad I could provide a thorough inspection and clearly explain what I found.
I also really enjoyed meeting your puppy during the visit. That was definitely a highlight of my day. If you ever have questions about your roof or need help after another storm, I will be glad to assist.
Dave was great — he went above and beyond what any company would do. There were major issues with my insurance company, and he was there every step of the way helping me get things done. Dave and his crew were great — they made sure my motorcycle was covered up properly during the work, and they cleaned up beautifully when they were done.
Owner Response
Thank you so much for this review and for trusting me and the crew with your home. I know this project had some difficult moments, especially with the insurance side of the process, and I’m grateful I was able to help with documentation, communication, and support along the way. It also means a lot that you noticed the care the crew took around your property and the cleanup after the roof was completed, because protecting the property matters just as much as the roof itself. I truly appreciate your kind words and your trust.
The Roof Shepherd is amazing. He is very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. Getting a new roof can be stressful, but he made the process super easy. He answered all our questions and concerns, worked with our insurance company, and gave us a good price for a new Class 4 roof. The workers were very courteous and professional — they went the extra mile, made sure everything was okay in the attic, worked around the gutters, installed new vents, and later repaired our shed connected to the house. They got everything done in one day, hours ahead of schedule. I highly recommend The Roof Shepherd to anyone that needs a new roof!
Owner Response
Thank you so much for this review. It really means a lot. Getting a new roof can be stressful, so I’m grateful we were able to make the process easier, walk through the insurance side, answer your questions, and get your Class 4 impact-rated roof installed the right way. I also appreciate you mentioning the crew. They worked hard, stayed professional, handled the attic and ventilation details, worked carefully around the gutters, and helped make sure the shed repair was taken care of afterward. Thank you again for trusting The Roof Shepherd with your home and for recommending us. It was a privilege to serve your family.
